Why do people look at femur to study primates?

What's so special about the femur of a primate?

I'm not an expert, but I assume you can tell from the shape of the femur what direction it needs to be in to support weight. That tells you whether the animal stands upright like a human, or on all fours like a gorilla, or jumps like a lemur, or what.
