time t = ΔV/a = (8-12)/a

time depends upon the acceleration a :

if a = -1 m/sec^2 , then t = -4/-1 = 4.0 sec

if a = -4 m/sec^2 , then t = -4/-4 = 1.0 sec

....and so on

What's the acceleration? If its magnitude is "a," then

time t = (12 - 8)m/s / a
