Are there lots of people that try to do what my brother does? He doesn't like to work, so he just tries to invest really well?

  • Everyone needs to be in that state when they retire.

They're called retirees.  Is your brother young with little capital?  Then he's just lazy and delusional. X= 0.03* Y.  Where X is the amount invested in a diversified portfolio and Y is the annual withdrawals you can make without likely depleting your capital.

It's not common, but it does happen. There are a number of people who live on investments only. They have to be pretty good at it to make it in the world today this way.

Investing IS working.  Investments must be monitored.  And nobody invests without study.  Your brother DOES work.  He keeps himself apprised of what's going on in the business world, what company is doing what, where technology is head - and MUCH more.  That's the only way one can do it successfully, on an ongoing basis, unless he does Forex, Options, etc. and uses software to assist him in his decisions.

Yes there are lots of people who try to do that.

Any idiot can make money in a bull market of epic proportion.    Let's see what happens during a ten year recession.

Yes, lots of people are full-time investors.  Many of them are not especially good at it.  And don't forget that capital gains and investment income are taxable.

He may a full time day trader. Id need a bit more clarification to say that he is one, but yes, there are many others out there who do this. I dont know the numbers, but my guess is that there are likely 10s of thousands that do this.

Are you saying he doesn't work, or just doesn't like to work. Kind of hard to invest if you don't work for money. And try using English next time.

Where does he get the money he invests?

Yes, a fair number of people who've made enough money to invest, and who've invested intelligently enough that they've made a good income and thus can keep investing, just live off of their investments.  It's actually "work" to do this. After all, some people do it for a living on behalf of other people.

In other words, you can call this a job, a form of being in business for yourself.
