    A statue of Ulysses Grant was torn down in CA. Grant was a Union general who fought the confederacy, and fought for the freedom of slaves.

    Destroying statues that represent people who are no longer admired, for sound reasons, IS progressive.

    Of course, there is some subjectivity attached to that.

    I don't believe that art should be forgotten or hidden, even art that has dubious origins, like a statue of an explorer that was also a racist that engaged in cruel behavior... but I don't think that art should be sitting in a public place of prominence. Society has to put their art into the right context for their perspective of the world.

    It's like, what do you do about Michael Jackson? A tower of 80s music, an undeniable piece of history, but also a kiddie fiddler... well, I think, you don't deny the past, but at the same time you do not allow dodgy historical figures to remain in a context of respect.
