Is this over kill protection from Covid 19 ??

I could maybe understand if you work in the medical field, hair salon, nail salon, maybe still teaching classes but average person I would think the face mask would be enough.

Get the mask several and several face shields.  Rotate between them daily and clean them.  I had the unfortunate experience of a dumb @$$ co worker coming to work and test positive for covid. I now have to be tested and miss up to two or three weeks of work. Showing no symptoms so think I am good.  Whenever I do return to work I am buying two or three shields and box 20 pack of N95 masks.

Imho, yes. A face shield is designed to prevent eye contact with sputum when a patient coughs or sneezes. But that's not an issue in a normal, social environment. Wearing a mask alone is ample protection.
