Is it true that Puritans considered music that was played w/ the middle finger to sound evil?

My former music teacher told me that when people in Puritan Massachusetts played church music with the middle finger, their middle finger would be chopped off because the Puritans thought that any church music being played with the middle finger sounded evil and unholy.

No.  The FU gesture traditionally in England uses 2 fingers. What was considered diabolical in music at that time was the use of the tritone - an augmented fourth or diminished fifth Interval, like C to F#.  What fingers you use to play an instrument cannot be HEARD.  However, there was a period of time when the harpsichord was played without using the thumbs.  Bad idea . . .
