    No particular reason other than conspicuous consumption.   Some rich people will buy the most expensive of anything just to show off, to be conspicuous, that they can.  

    Once, when wrist watches were all mechanically driven, the Rolex had the finest movement and therefore the most accurate time keeping of most watches.  So paying big bucks for a wrist watch that kept better more accurate time was worth it.  

    But now, when all worthy watches are electronic and super accurate and precise, anyone can buy a wristwatch for much less than the Rolex and get Rolex accuracy.  So the only reason for buying a Rolex now is because it shows off that you are rich enough to afford one.
