Jim has $520 in his savings account and adds $9 per week.

At the same time,

Rhonda has $40 in her savings account and adds $15 per week.

A)

How long will it take for Rhonda to have the same amount as Jim?

520 + 9w = 40 + 15w

6w = 480

w = 80

It will take 80 weeks.

B)

How much will each have?

Each will have $1240.

This doesn't matter. It is what they do with their savings that will show their accomplishments. :D

Let w be number of weeks: you want each part to be equal so

520 + 9w = 40 + 15w

6w = 480 thus w = 80 weeks

when both will have $1240

What you need to do is setup expressions for Jim and for Rhonda. And then set them equal together, solving for the number of weeks. You'll then plug this answer in to the expressions to figure out how much they'll have at the end of that time.

Here is a helpful graphic I put together to help you with the math and setup.

solve 520 + 9w = 40 + 15w {Math only gets harder !!} ##EDIT - Why the thumbs down? Because I did not totally do the arithmetic ? or because math will get easier in the future ??

May I say that, when you ask others to do your homework for you, you will never learn anything, regardless of the good marks you might receive for doing this. Ask your actual teacher to explain to you how this can be calculated and then, next time, you will have more understanding of how to work things out for yourself. You will not do well in life if you cheat and could lose any job you acquire if they find that your qualifications are false. Don't go down that route and don't cheat in ANY aspect of life at all. It's not worth it in the long term.

A)How long will it take for Rhonda to have the same amount as Jim?

Jim has $520 and adds $9 a week = Rhoda has $40 and adds $15 a week

520 + 9w = 40 + 15w

Subtract 40 from both sides

480 + 9w = 15w

Subtract 9w from both sides

480 = 6w

Divide both sides by 6

80 = w

80 weeks <–––––

------------------------

B)How much will each have?

Jim

520 + 9w

520 + 9 * 80

520 + 720

1240

Rhoda should have the same

let's check

40 + 15w

40 + 15 * 80

40 + 1200

1240

$1240 <––––––
