If they extract too much energy from the sun we could all die.

Hey A, in a nutshell, yes, or at least way more eco than coal, oil or even natural gas. But we cannot rely on wind, sun or even hydro for all our needs. Over reliance on one type of energy is what got us into this mess to begin with.

Our home has been powered by the wind and sun for 18 years now. We still have grid power but our electric bill is less than $10 per month now. We have not been without power for even a minute in all that time. Solar panels and batteries are 100% recyclable, which is why solar  and battery manufacturers pay to have scrap ones returned today. So yes, it’s eco friendly.

Solar energy is unreliable. Nations that have big availability of land area exposed to solar radiation, high values of average daily solar insolation can find solar power to be economic than other sources of power. High latitudes have low insolation values, long winter nights. Equatorial regions see daily cloud cover, rainfall and thick forest cover that prevents sunlight from getting exposed to the ground. Tropical nation like India has very low availability of land area due to various reasons like high density of human population, construction of high-rise towers, congested slums, 4 months of heavy monsoon, commercial space, farming activity. Hot desert climates can use solar power. India needs to install floating solar units over its water bodies. Installing solar units over water bodies like lakes, rivers, pools will also help to reduce evaporative loss of water and thus provide water during water shortage season.

    It's all relative.

Compared to nothing - solar electricity certainly has an impact. It takes energy and materials to construct the panels, and then the placement of them can be an issue sometimes, for example if a forest is cut down for solar, that's a negative impact.

But compared to other means of generating electricity, solar generally looks pretty good in terms of it's impact over the life of the panels.

Electricity produced from solar yields no emissions, no greenhouse gases, and no fossil fuels, but it does require a certain amount of energy to make the solar panels.
