When a sales trainee came to orientation in a Trump truck with a Confederate flag on it, we fired him on the spot. Dumb mistake on his part?

That's fine.  Political belief isn't a protected group for employment laws.  You can't discriminate against age, religion, sex, disability, etc... when hiring new employees but political affiliation isn't on that list.  Although some might argue that a Trump supporter would fall under the "disability" category.

We had a trainee come in to our office. She had black lives matter bumper stickers on her car. We fired her.

Would you also fire a trainee if they came to orientation in a vehicle with an AntiFa flag, or a Che / BLM shirt etc?

Is your place of business consistently apolitical or politically biased?

Employers have every right to insist that politics don't belong in the work place.  If that potential employee was planning to drive that vehicle to work every day and park it the company parking lot, the employee has every right to tell them not to

It would be amusing to know what you are pretending to be “selling”.

So you discriminated against and fired him because of his political beliefs?
