How can I give steam vegetables flavor? Without using; butter, cheese or salt?

    Fresh herbs like basil, chives, parsley, coriander, ground black pepper, lemon juice. For a sauce, use yoghurt, tahini, olive oil with dijon mustard, hummus, roasted pepper and tomato, chilli sauce.

    Add Just a Dash of Salt. ...

    Add Just a Dash of Brown Sugar. ...

    Boil in Broth. ...

    Add a Twist of Citrus. ...

    Marinade and Throw Veggies on the Grill. ...

    Make a Sauce. ...

    Use Hot Sauce.

    Here are things I use on vegetables instead of butter, cheese or salt:

    Sliced Scallions

    Garlic powder or sautéed minced garlic

    Ground Pepper

    Citrus, lemon, lime and even orange


    Celery Seed...especially deliscious in thre water with corn on the cob. A must try.


    Cumin with canned corn/corn on the cob




    Minced red onions

    Roasted red peppers

    Extra Virgin olive oil drizzled over cooked veggies is very  good, so are

    Infused flavors in extra Virgin olive oil, such as lemon, lime, toasted sesame seed oil,     garlic, basil, paprika and other flavors.

    Sesame seeds

    Sunflower seeds


    Herbs d' Provence 

    Hot sauce

    Soak veggies in non fat salad dressing and grill or roast in oven

    Diced tomatoes

    Mint is fantastic with carrots

    Roasted veggies in the oven brushed with olive oil and herbs are very good

    Zucchini, tomatoes and onions halved and grilled are full of flavor

    Horseradish sauce


    Tomato sauce

    Sautéed garlic and onions

    Mushrooms, raw or sautéed

    Baby cocktail size onions

    Minced celery

    I stopped using butter and regular table salt years ago. When I do use salt, it is either sea salt or Pink Hymilaian Salt, sparingly.

    Maybe try something like Mrs. Dash, or a similar seasoning mix that has flavors you think you would like.

    Mrs. Dash is a brand of no-salt seasonings that flavor doggone near anything. They're super good on steamed veggies and really convenient.

    A drizzle of balsamic vinegar is good on some. 

    Apple cider vinegar is good with some

    Any variety of herbs and spices will work. Placed in the water or on the veggies they will infuse the veggies as they cook. 

    Soy sauce..although that does have a sodium content. 

    Lemon or other citrus, orange with carrots is good. 

    And simply blanching veggies and then serving them cold is a great option with a dip made from hummus or avocado or even a salsa. (jicama  chips with salsa or hummus!)

    Try using dried thyme or sage. Liquids would likely just run off.

    I say your comments. Yes, you can use whatever you wish, but steam veggies first, then place in a bowl and add and mix whatever you want. Soy sauce and garlic would be really yummy together. So yeah, whatever seasonings you decide, do it, just steam first, then mix altogether while still warm, gently, so you don't crush anything. I do this a lot myself :)

    Balsamic vinegar goes well with steamed vegetables.
