    As long as you are willing to pay any ETFs on the old carrier, for the phone if not fully paid for, you'd be paying it off in full, as well as any plan payoff, if you have not already paid your 24 to 36 month plan in full.

    And do not hope that the new carrier will be paying off your old contract

     Read any wording that suggests that they are paying off contracts or phone balances. The wording normally has hoops you need to follow to the letter, and if you don't do them, you don't get anything paid off.
