'After' used as it appears here, is a preposition.

more "precisely"..."after" is preposition; "month" is prep object

after a month [comma] she returned, or

    she returned after a month.

more colloquially, she returned in a month.

After is a preposition here, but if you say "She returned a month after", the word After is an adverb. I hope this clarifies things.

While the expression "after a month" answers the question of when, there is no adverb as such.
