You can't go wrong with a Squier Stratocaster. This is a very versatile guitar and will work for just about any genre of music. Also consider an Epiphone SG or Les Paul model.

Remember to buy a decent practice amp too.  The amp is the voice of the guitar and equally important.  Fender Mustang is a good choice.

There are other cheap guitars and amps that will work for beginners, but the ones I've mentioned are safe, popular choices.  Best to go to a guitar shop and try a few.

It would help to know what kind of music you want to play and what your budget is. Just go to a well-stocked music store like Guitar Center or Sam Ash and ask for assistance.
