Why is “phonics” not spelled the way it sounds?

    There are many words like this in the English language. Knife is another example of a word that is spelled differently than the way it's spoken. I don't know the answer as to why these things happen, but I think it might have something to do with the way the English language developed. English, Portuguese,Spanish, French, and Italian are all derived from and are descended from Latin, which was the language of Rome. That's why this quintet of languages are called Romance languages. They are all related to each other, too. Languages that have no relation to Rome, such as German, Dutch, etc., belong to a different family.

    I dont know, alot of ward, spells different, then the way it sounds

    A LOT of words in the English language are not spelled like they sound!
