What percentage of Earth is uninhabitable?

How curious. I read about that today. The estimate was that 12% of the terrestrial Earth was suited to human habitation (as opposed to brief visits). If you include the oceans as part of Earth, the figure drops to 4%. The rest is too hot, to cold, too arid, too wet, or elevated enough that we couldn't get sufficient oxygen. We can visit these places only by bringing what we need from elsewhere.

Almost all of the Earth's surface is inhabited by something.
