Should a dog be in a crate all day and night?

I know someone who leaves their dogs crated all day. About 22/24 hrs a day. They exercise for about an hr or two then back in the crate. If they move even a little in the crate she shocks them with the collar. They are also Australian shepards.

She should be arrested and her dogs confiscated. She is treating them incredibly cruelly--and doesn't deserve to own any animals.

No this is not acceptable. Dogs need exercise and they generally don’t like being in crates. Some dogs like crates at times because it provides a sense of security, but that’s when they go in there as they please. Locking a dog in its crate for hours at a time is just cruel. Just like a human wouldn’t like sitting in a small confined space for a while, dogs wouldn’t like it either. Please report that person to Animal Control. The dog needs a better life.

No, they dog shouldn't be in a crate all day.  And what have you done to stop this abuse - other than posting on Yahoo?

    That is considered animal abuse.

Not a good way to treat a dog. There are animal rights agencies who can look into this.
