Well Ruby was a big fan of JFK.  He really liked the President and so was presumably angry that Oswald had killed him.  After the shooting, Ruby also said that he wanted to spare Jackie Kennedy from having to testify at a trial for Oswald.  But his shooting may have been impulsive.  Ruby was a police gadfly who was known to a lot of cops.  He had spent the days after Kennedy's assassination hanging around the police station a couple of times.  He doesn't seem to have been intentionally stalking Oswald, or at least not doing so in a very determined manner.  He may have just been trying to get close to a big story which was happening right in his own backyard.  On the day that Oswald was murdered, Ruby took his sweet time getting there.  He stopped off first to wire money to someone at Western Union.  Then, with just a few minutes to spare before Oswald showed up, he casually walked down a ramp into the parking garage.  It may be that when Oswald was brought out, Ruby, who was nicknamed "Sparky" because of his temper, simply got filled with rage and lashed out.

He was a mafia hit man. That's what they do.

Jack Ruby died of cancer in early 1967. It is likely that he knew in 1963 that his days were numbered. People in those circumstances have less to fear from long prison sentences.

Lee Harvey Oswald would have told everything he knew about the assassins of JFK, but only if officials transferred him to Washington and away from the Dallas Police Department.

What Oswald knew was the mob's involvement and they wanted him silenced.

Jack Ruby was a cheap suck-up nightclub owner who was a nobody that wanted to be a part of the mob. In his Carousel Club, he played both ends of the spectrum, rubbing elbows with Chicago mobsters and local police alike - both were regular customers.

He did associate with Sam Giancana out of Chicago (Ruby was originally from Chicago) and when Giancana put out the hit on Oswald to keep him quiet, he got Ruby to do the job. Being a regular fixture at the police station, no one questioned him walking down the ramp where Oswald was being transported to another facility.

Ruby had cancer and didn't have much longer to live - that was part of why he was chosen. All he had to do was keep his mouth shut and his family in Chicago would be taken care of. Not having long to live it wasn't a long wait.
