Transexuals have been using whatever bathrooms they wanted for decades. Why is this suddenly an issue now?

Is it because conservatives lost their fight against same sex marriage and needed a wedge issue? Or do they just a need a new way to make life hard for LGBT people?

It's because ignorance is bliss, and now that conservatives are aware that transgender people need to use the can too, they suddenly think trans people will be showing off their genitals to everyone who comes into the bathroom or will be spying on people and trying to get a peek of the genitals of everyone else.  It's paranoid delusion, really, because they are so hopelessly ignorant and afraid of transgender people.

I think people have understandable concerns, which are however groundless and due to ignorance, and that the greater visibility of trans people brought them to mind. Please don't assume that GSM people support gay marriage. Some of us are against ALL marriage as heteronormative.

    This is false.

Almost no trannies are able to pass as real women, and men in dresses will not be tolerated in the ladies room.

The nice trannies either use the bathroom at home or use the disabled restroom.

Most Americans had little knowledge of transsexuals and lived alongside them happily with no concern over toilets until Olympic gold medallist Bruce Jenner decided to become Caitlyn. All of a sudden on top of same-sex marriage there was a new threat to their notions of propriety and that had to be stamped out. Consequently all the fuss about who gets to use which toilet.

It doesn't happen anywhere else in the western world. In many countries public toilets are open to anyone of any sex or sexuality and there are no problems. At my university in the residential colleges all the shower/toilet units are unisex except for one women-only unit in each block which is for those with religious restrictions such as Muslims. It really isn't a problem and until people started going on about it, it never was even in the USA. It is a non-issue that has been made into an issue by bigots.
