I’ve recently been reading a book about Julius Cesar etc. But it never tells me about how the Romans’ got defeated

Rome fell as they got to know northen tribes, german ones in particular.Civilization needed too much technology to live THAT far north & those who did manage to do it were incredible fighters,so romans lost to them.

Basically, they got fat, dumb, and happy, ie corrupt and lazy, and suffered relentless attacks from barbarians. Eventually they got ground down. In the Western Empire. Don't know how the Eastern Empire fell.

Effectively, it stagnated.

They weren't defeated in a single battle or conflict. There were many reasons the Empire fell. Mostly, these were economic. It had overexpanded, couldn't control its outer borders, the government was corrupt and disjointed, and it led to small defeats on the outer edges by Barbarian tribes, who took back land and territories they had had taken from them when the empire began to expand. Add to all of this the rise of anti-Roman religions--including Christianity--which began to undermine values that the government and citizens had come to expect. It crumbled slowly, but inevitably.

You need to read Gibbon: "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" or at least a synopsis thereof.

Unchecked and unmanaged entry by the Goths and other non-Romans fleeing the Huns. They established their own enclaves and engaged in what we would call terrorism against a weak and ineffective government that came from a power vacuum and warring between the sons of Theodosius.

the empire fell because somebody hit the self destruct button

It takes a lot of money to feed and maintain an army capable of holding onto conquered lands far away from the home country. The conquered people didn't just sit quietly and take being ruled over. Rome eventually couldn't raise enough taxes to keep it all together, and it had its won internal problems to deal with: corruption, power struggles and a population grown soft with the relatively good life they'd known for several centuries.

Read Gibbon's "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire". The "fall" took place over centuries due to various factors such as inflation, power of the military,, political structure of government. etc.
