No, it's based on the novella "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" by Stephen King.  It's part of the book Different Seasons, published in 1982.  The book contained four novellas, one for each season.  Three of the stories have since been made into feature films.  In addition to the Shawshank Redemption, the story "The Body" about a group of boys going on a quest to find a dead body, was turned into the 1980s film Stand By Me, and the story "Apt Pupil", about a boy who discovers that his neighbor was a Nazi who participated in the Holocaust, was made into a film of the same name.

The novella, Shawshank Redemption is largely the same as the movie, with the differences being mostly the kind of condensing and editing which comes with trying to squeeze a book into a film.  In the novella, for example, Red (who is Irish-American instead of African-American) relates more of the history of Shawshank, including several other escape attempts.  Also, the warden in the film is a composite of several wardens who served at Shawshank during Andy's time there.  Like all of King's major works (except for 11/22/63 which is based around the Kennedy assassination) it's an original story with no basis in real life.
