A solid ball has a radius of 0.110 m, and a mass of 1.88 kg. How much force must be applied to the edge to give it an angular acceleration of 3.09 9rad/s^2?

torque = τ = Fd = F(0.11)

assuming the sphere is rotating around a diameter...

I = (2/5)MR² = (0.4)(1.88)(0.11)²

α = τ/I

τ = αI = (3.09)(0.4)(1.88)(0.11)² = F(0.11)

F = (3.09)(0.4)(1.88)(0.11)²/(0.11)

F = (3.09)(0.4)(1.88)(0.11) newtons

you have a calculator....

angular acceleration in rad/s²

α = τ/I for constant α

I = moment of inertia in kg•m²

τ = torque in N•m

I is moment of inertia in kg•m²

I = cMR²

M is mass (kg), R is radius (meters)

c = 1 for a ring or hollow cylinder

c = 2/5 solid sphere around a diameter

c = 7/5 solid sphere around a tangent

c = ⅔ hollow sphere around a diameter
