They work, but there are conditions:

High humidity reduces and sometimes totally negates their effectiveness.

That's why they are most often used in desert and near-desert areas

--- any place where the air is very dry.

A/C works anywhere until the temperature gets too high

for the condenser to be able to radiate enough heat into the air.

Mine works just fine. I have to turn it down sometimes because it gets too cold in here.

A junk device that produces a few degrees lower cool air but at the same time increasing the moisture in air that makes the hot room even worst.

LOL You just don`t know what you`re doing. Mine blows air at 58 degrees when it`s 90 outside. You HAVE to open a window at the other end of the house. You can`t save the air up from the cooler. It HAS to exhaust OUT as fast as it comes IN. And if the humidity is high, they don`t work as well.

"Evaporative", and yes, they work quite well in non-humid climates, but they need to be cleaned from time to time.  Mold grows rather easily in them.

Not if you put a capful of clorox in it once in a while.  And drain it every night. You HAVE to know how to operate one. Otherwise you will have problems.
