What does the S gear stand for in my 1972 cutlass supreme automatic?

I recently bought a 1972 cutlass supreme with the rocket 350 and 3 speed automatic. I noticed there is an S and L on the shifter. I know the L is for low gear but I'm not sure about the s. I heard it could be for sport mode but I feel like a car from 1972 wouldn't have that. I also read it could stand for second gear. Anyone out there know for sure?

There's no such thing as sport mode in the vintage. S simply stands for second.
