Except for the book aficionados, who probably collected every book they could get their hands on, most people were informed through television and radio.  If they had any reading material, it probably wasn't anything more dense than a brochure or leaflet, and maybe some entertainment magazines and state sponsored textbooks.

Beatty seemed to have some reverence for classic literature, despite his job.  Montag, on the other hand, never really thought that books were important until Clarisse started getting him thinking about them, so he didn't own anything like it.  Clarisse might have gotten at least a glimpse of some of the forbidden literature at some point in her life, maybe through another book aficionado who was a relative or neighbor.

They don't! Tehre are no books. WHen they find them, they burn them.

The only books that are allowed have had all words and passages that could be "offensive" deleted. Books that arouse an emotion in the reader have been banned. Books that require thinking have also been banned.  So essentially the only books allowed are not much more  than a pre-primer.
