Their: size, appearance, personality, adaptability, low exercise needs, and companionship.
Size: Small dog in general seem to be high in demand for various reasons. The cost of care is greatly reduced, they're easy to transport, and do well in dog friendly apartments/rentals which generally have a strict size and/or breed limit.
Appearance: You can't deny that they're cute and even rather elegant looking when allowed to keep their flowing and luxurious long coat. Those who do choose to clip their Shih Tzu coat have a variety of styles to choose from which can also look adorable. They've got very expressive eyes also
Personality: They're confident, happy, social little dogs with quite the funny streak in them.
Adaptability: Whether you live in an apartment in heart of the city or the natural wide and open spaces on farmland these dogs will go with the flow. They're happy anywhere with their owner.
Exercise: They don't require a whole lot of exercise. While many other breeds particularly those bred for work or sporting purposes need at least an hour (preferably twice day) of vigorous exercise (with many even wanting more than that) the Shih Tzu is one of the few breeds who are more than happy with just a simple brisk walk around the neighbourhood and maybe a little play later on in the day.
Companionship: They were LITERALLY BRED to be your best bud.Your companion. Whether that's in your arms, on your lap, at your side, or by your feet they just want to be with you and love you and are happy with that.
