How come males are dominant in Lion society but females are dominant Hyena society?

I mean, shouldn’t the male be dominant in every species?

because there is no "should". nature likes diversity. Some species are monogamous, some are promiscuous. Some have male leaders, some have female ones

Male lions  are around for breeding purposes; not to mention to fight alongside the females in time of serious threat; only. Woe be to a strange lion that enters a pride of lionesses with cubs; to protect their cubs they *will* gang up on him.

Males aren't dominant in lion societies... they do nothing but patrol and defend territory. Females do all the hunting and control the pride.

yeah, like you'd have energy left for hunting if you shagged 12 times a day

Male lions aren't dominant. What gives you that idea? They're lazy and eat what the females have brought down. Males aren't dominant as elephants, whales, dolphins, or even orangutans (which are so solitary the adults barely 'speak' to each other for years).

The animal kingdom is fascinating. Actually studying animal behavior dispels a lot of misconceptions.

Among Hyenas, female are larger than males, whereas, among lions the males are larger than females.

Female Spotted hyenas are bigger and stonger than males, and that's mostly what it comes down to in the animal world.  They are a bit of an exception to the rule among mammals.  Lions are bigger and stronger than lionesses.

It's only humans who think and care about this.  Animals don't have an ego, I don't think they have a sense of themselves as an individual, but they know their group.  They don't feel ashamed if another animal is stronger than them, if they might get injured, they back off and survive.  They don't get offended by the other sex and ignore each other and stop breeding. :)

For some reason, female hyenas are exposed to more androgens in utero.
