In my mind, Liam is a nickname.  It's typically a nickname for the more formal name, William.

Its not the fact the nsme "needs" a nn  its just that people shorten names as its a term of endearment or because it quicker

They don’t ‘need’ one, but they might happen spontaneously. I’d end up calling Liam Lee, as it’s quicker.

Because it’s fun. I like having a nickname. Term of endearment

What would you abbreviate Liam to?  Li?  Lim?

Because a nickname is NOT always about making a name shorter.

A nickname can be ANYTHING and doesn't even have to be related to the person's name.

Some people do never actually have a "nickname" because no one ever loved them enough to give them one.

There are many teenage girls on this site who are interested in names and they tend to like nicknames. (I do, too, although I'm not a teen.) But I agree that Liam doesn't need a nickname.
