The war was very unpopular especially among young people of draft age. It did not seem like our war but a leftover French Colonial conflict.

Yes, early on 1964-1966 Americans thought they were going in to save S. Vietnam like they saved S. Korea 12 years before. They knew there would be a N. Vietnam that would be communist just like a communist N. Korea and thought there would be a pro US S. Vietnam just like pro US S. Korea.

The American public and most US policy makers going in had no idea Vietnam was way different from Korea.

Their eyes began to open 1967 when they found after 2 1/2 years war (the length of Korea) the US wasn't winning/ saving anything, were worse off than at the start and the Vietnam situation had never really been like the Korean situation.

I think the generals did. There's a saying that generals are always fighting the last war, and that was the case then.

As miserable as the winter conditions in Korea were, the ground froze in the winter, and tropical diseases didn't exist. The communists were seen as aggressors by the people in South Vietnam, because they failed to agitate for years before invading. The communists in Vietnam posed as the champions who drove out the Japanese and the overbearing French. Another complicating factor was that the narcotics trade in Vietnam was well established even before WWII, and all the governments were hopelessly corrupt. The American public only knew this if they took the time to examine it.

Yes. They expected North Vietnam to be a new (communist) country and thus have another buffer state .
