What does the U.K government know about COVID-19 in light of them unhesitantly opening the Nightingale hospitals?

Does it take a university degree to look at the numbers and see how bad things are in the UK?  The US is getting the majority of the bad press, but currently, the US has about twice the number of deaths as the UK but SEVEN TIMES the number of confirmed cases.  Just today, so far, the UK has more than 50% the number of new deaths the US has, at 938 to 1,667.  But the US has more than EIGHT TIMES the number of new cases than the UK, at 46,000 to 5,500.

The current mortality rate in the UK is 11.7%.  In the US, it's 3.3%. The US has also tested about EIGHT TIMES as many people.

COMMON- BL**dy - SENSE for a change.   It was clear, going by the rise in affected people, that the NHS Hospitals most likely wouldn't be able to cope.   Perhaps it was a touch precipitous, but damned if they did, damned if they didn't .  Better to have too many hospital beds, than too few.

They haven't a clue what they are doing. They are like a load of headless chickens in panic mode.

They are being sensible and know that there will be far more people seriously ill, in the coming weeks.  The people that broke the 'social distancing' advice the last few weekends are just starting to get their symptoms and some of them will become seriously ill and end up needing Hospital treatment.

Most Hospital staff are working double shifts and are calling newly qualified and recently retired Doctors and Nurses to report for work.  To help cope with the influx of seriously ill people.

That a lot more people are going to need Intensive Care judging by what is happening in Spain and Italy. They have to predict bed capacity to stay ahead of projected demand. They are opening them in phases, so the first one may never end up with the full quota of 4000 beds if they are not needed. They are also converting ice rinks into mortuaries.

LOL (kind of).   How many ice rinks are there in the UK?
