Why does the government even give end dates to lockdowns and measures, when they'll just keep extending them?

For example, a stay a home order until April 15, now extended to May, which may be extended to July, which may be extended to October, which may even be extended to 2021, which may even be extended to 2022, which may even be extended to 2032, which may even be extended to infinity... You get the picture.

Why does the government even give end dates at all? Do they take delight in torturing us, and lying?

The words "at least" means they know they won't terminate the measures that day, and that they're clearly lying.

If the government doesn't know, why don't they just close down the world completely until "at least....(YES at least! I like that term)" the summer of 2021?! Make us suffer more, starve and be broke!

A lot of this is for planning purposes. Specifically letting schools know to tell teachers to do remote learning lesson plans at least until that date. The date however will always be changing until some progress is made on conquering or mitigating COVID 19.

I absolutely agree with you. It's foolish. And it makes them look like fools. And it was SUPER foolish of the US Surgeon General to say - just last week - "The next week is going to be our Pearl Harbor moment. It’s going to be our 9/11 moment. It’s going to be the hardest moment for many Americans in their entire lives, and we really need to understand that if we want to flatten that curve and get through to the other side, everyone needs to do their part." And what if the week AFTER THAT is even worse? "It's our Armageddon week"?

The government has a job of protection and one thing is not instill a panic of fear into their people. To keep busy, start growing some food in your backyard or at least at this time in history gain knowledge of how to grow food in containers or in small areas of your land. We all can't live on the farm.

Jean... They cant grow things in their back yard.. IT would require them to get their hands dirty.

They're aspirational dates, three months is the probable minimum figure, but, if they said that at the beginning there would be civil unrest. The problem being that we really know very little about how to control the spread of the virus other than sitting tight, avoiding people trying to keep safe it gets easier as it goes on providing you can get food etc., but, you have to start taking it seriously, stop bloody politicizing it, accept it's dangerous and get on with it...

To placate people who "need a date!", as if a viral plague gives any consideration to an arbitrary date placed on a calendar.

quite frankly, it's easier to get people to stay home once they're home.... and it's easier to get them to comply initially if the "hit" doesn't seem so extreme...

for example, despite what the made-for-tv "left/right" melodrama tells you, the simple fact is that many people remain skeptical about the need to stay home (consider the crowds of people who came out to watch the hospital ship arrive, for example)...

telling people "it's just two weeks" made it a palatable "bite" for those who were skeptical, but felt the need to "do their civic duty."  now that those businesses are closed, it is much easier to keep them closed.

We would not need to extend if the United States had a coordinated plan. Every state is doing what they want which, in turn, creates different outcomes.

While one state is winding down with cases, another one riled up because they did not lock down. Chicken and the egg.

    To give people hope.

People can better deal with a situation if they think they know something for sure, even if it changes.

"I can get to next week" is a lot easier to tell yourself than "I can get to.....whenever".

Government does not want to give up all of this newfound power they have.
