Would buying a router give me good ping playing games when my family is using the internet and making my ping spike?

I have a google fiber mini network box for internet in my home it is decent when only one person is using it but when many devices are connected and using it I start to have ping spikes when I am playing games. I don’t know much about how internet connection works or much about networks. I am connected to the network box with a powerline adapter.  I just want to know if buying a router would give me consistent good ping when many other devices are connected or if there is nothing I can do because the network box can only bring in so much.  If I should get a router is my network box only compatible with a certain kinda of router and what router should I buy?  Thanks for helping!

The mini network box is a router (as well as a modem).

You will gain nothing by adding another router to the network.

Your google fiber mini network box is a router.  Think of mini network box as the gateway to the Internet for your home.  All Internet traffic to/from your home goes through that box.  Adding another router won't solve the problem unless you also acquire a separate service which would involve a second Internet drop into your home.  It will cost another monthly fee and an installation charge.

It sounds like you've the kind of network where you can't just plug in a router and expect it to work!  Anyhow, what's happening is that other users are using data and your "network box" (router) is sharing that data out among whatever is connected.  Unless you intend to kick everyone else off the network then just changing the equipment is going to do nothing!  You'd probably have a better result if you paid for a better internet package that has a higher data rate!
