So how do Alaskan dollars work?

I was on my way up to Alaska and I met some guy in a gas station and he told me I need "Alaskan dollars" in order to buy things in Alaska, so I exchanged all the money I had ($2000) for about 3450 AKD (Alaskan Dollars). Why does Alaska have their own currency? It surprises me

The Alaskan bullworm is attracted to the greenish colour of USD banknotes, so it's dangerous to carry US cash on you in Alaska. Thus it was necessary for Alaska to develop its own currency.
