Money was invented for convenience by people to make trade easier. It has nothing to do with government control.

  • Money does not have an 'essence'.  If it did - it would be greed.  :D

It's just a convenience so that when people trade they can use partial lots. Otherwise we'd be saying hey I'll make you one and a half shoes for two thirds of a cow, etc.

It's simply the medium to allow the secure and efficient exchange of goods and services. Originally it represented a valueless note with a promise to exchange for something with intrinsic value, in the case of gbp a pound of gold.

So it's nature is simply a promise based on credibility and trust. Now try exchanging that one pound coin for a pound of gold and see how far you get

(Gordon Brown sold off most of the gold reserve when gold was at a record low price)

It's a medium of exchange that's easier to carry around than goats.  At one time it had substance, it was real.  One pound sterling actually represented 1 pound (troy) of silver, and a penny was a pennyweight of silver.  Now it's not backed by anything, it's only worth something because the government that issues it will accept it as payment of taxes.

66 shillings to 1 pound troy stirling silver. Britain left the gold standard in 1931
