is it better to say background actor or extra?

Some extras like to call themselves 'background actors' because it makes them feel more important. But the fact is, extras are NOT actors. No talent is required. They don't have to get training. All they need is to look right for the scene and be able to follow basic instructions.
Most people who are in the acting business refer to them as 'extras' and feel that using the term 'background actors' is a bit pretentious and amusing. Some people become extras in the hope of being 'noticed' and getting a real acting role, but it doesn't work like that.

Depends on your ability to speak, I should imagine. "Extra" is nice and short, and just about anyone who doesn't have a speech impediment could probably say it. So I'll go for "extra" as the best one of the two to say. Hope this helped.
"Extra"! See? Easy!
