What made Ken Shimura such a hit with foreign residents of Japan?

I think the guy was really able to make the Japanese sense of humor universal. I recall back in the nineties my fellow students at Japanese language school had two must see shows-Ken Shimura and Chibi Marukochan. Characters such as Bakatono came across even if one didn't have a good grasp of the Japanese language. I will miss him.

Goofy, physical comedy that you really don't need to know much Japanese to appreciate. "Baka-tono" was one of the first TV shows I liked when I moved to Japan in 2004.

Shimura's appeal is the result of his poking fun (satirizing) authority figures (such as those in business, government, and even gangsters and school officials) and aspects of Japanese culture itself. Satirizing people like that is always popular among the masses.
