because what's best for himself, and the country, are rarely the same thing, and he only cares about the former.

Besides, some Americans are convicted felons. Others are minors. And some others are just stupid and/or have no real interest in voting.

He already told us why: if Americans vote in large numbers then Republicans will tend to lose.

It's a fact that savvy Republican operators will privately acknowledge.  America leans more towards the Democrats than the Republicans.  So when turnout in elections is high, Democrats tend to benefit.  That was the case in 2008 and 2012 when Democrats captured the White House on waves of high turnout (especially in 2008).  In 2016, we saw turnout slide and Republicans, barely, won the Presidency.  It's also true at the Congressional level.  Democrats have won seats in Congress in each of the last presidential elections, when turnout tends to be high.  In the last decade, Republicans have only won seats in off year "mid term" elections.  In 2010, for example, they won a landslide victory, taking back the House.  But turnout in 2010 was extremely low, IIRC one of the lowest for a mid term ever.  Contrast that with 2018, when Democrats took back the House under Trump.  That year was a Democratic landslide because of high turnout.  The turnout rate in 2018 was something like 80-90% of the 2016 election, extremely high for a mid term and one of the highest mid term turnout levels of all time.

Trump knows that if all Americans voted he'd be toast.

Of course all Americans should take their civil responsibilities, like voting, seriously. People can't even take 3 min, to go to a website and answer a couple questions for the census survey.

So, Trump gets it that many Americans simply can't be good citizens.

He doesn't want you to vote if you are not going to vote for him.

Why would you want a bunch of demons to vote?

It’s an opinion piece. Written by a democrat. Therefore it’s dismissed as political propaganda.
