why is that monkey named donkey kong?

he is not a donkey.

    It was due to misconceptions in translation. Miyamoto wanted to convey "stubborn" and ended up using "donkey". "Kong" was just to capitalize on the popularity of "King Kong". Miyamoto basically wanted to evoke the image of "stubborn ape".

    Because if he would of been called 'Fred' do you think Nintendo would have had as much success with him?
