What would make some spirits stay earthbound?

If a person was killed .. tortured to death .. would they be resting in peace like we hope or would they remain Earthbound?

Usually, people's spirits move on to the Other Side after death, but certain kinds of death can turn them into ghosts. Certain sacrificial rites were aimed at creating such ghosts (for instance, to guard a treasure). Also, very strong emotional connection to people still living could bind spirits to our world (when a parent of a young child dies, they usually don't move on, but stay with their child as an invisible guardian).

People who have had NDE's explain there comes a point where the negative aspects are left behind and their pure self continues. Obviously if you are mostly negative them most of you would stay here and maybe only a little goes on.

So maybe the fear and pain is left behind here.

Certainly seems that way from the ones I've seen. Mostly it is their deaths I see which is pretty stressful.

It's folklore.  Whatever you want to believe.

Christianity states that a person's spirit doesn't remain earthbound.

Other religions and individuals have different ideas.

Scientifically, there is no valid evidence for ghosts/spirits/demons etc.

Free will or trauma, though ghosts are also sometimes fragments of souls.

It depends. Many people before the flood, and even some since the flood, have allowed the fallen angels ("Aliens") to modify their DNA. When this happens they are no longer Elohim and when they die they become demonic spirits and remain bound to waterless places on the Earth until the final judgment.

What about those spirits seen in or around lakes or rivers? That kind of shoots down that theory. I have seen the spirit of a drowned girl, s the waterless thing is a myth.

"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this, the judgment" (Hebrews 9:27). So the answer to your question is no.
