Is this sentence well written?

"I explained to my landlord that it is going to be difficult for me to pay rent."

I am not sure about that "to" before "my."

Yes, "to my landlord" is correct. It's the indirect object. You had to be explaining to someone. But it should be "the rent"

That 'to' is necessary. If you said 'I explained my landlord', the reader would wonder who you were going to explain the landlord to, and that was never in the sentence. The sentence is correct as is.

only if you are related to someone else what you told your landlord.

IF you are writting to your landlord..... it would be "Dear Landlord, it is going to be difficult for me to pay the rent."
