That is part of the Basic Obedience commands. Put the dog through a Basic Obedience course & educate your dog with the Basics of all dog training. This is just the basics of all dog training, the very first things a dog learns. Just like children, they need to be taught. You do not want a dumb dog, you want a smart obedient dog & obeys commands.

Dogs do not "LAY"; only chickens LAY eggs.  You can google how to do it, go to youtube for visual instructions or pick up any BOOK on dog training. I do not know why you'd ask, you've been SPAMMING the dog board with "how-tos" in dog training......... for weeks

The easiest way to start is by word association which means that as he lays down naturally then give the word 'down'  so he starts associating the position with the word.

If you want to do it correctly then do go on youtube as suggested as there are various ways such as putting a treat between their front paws and they will often lay down to get it.

One thing though,  whatever method you use ....don't give the word at all until he literally touches that position.   ie.  you only give the word 'down'  as his belly touches the floor into the down.

go to you tube, type in “How to train a dog to lay down”. Watch the video and follow the instructions.

It takes patience and many many repetitions, most dogs will learn it in one day but it takes them a few days to memorize the word or signal that you use to trigger the action you wish them to do.  If your dog does not get it at first, practice, practice, practice.   Sessions should be short.  No more than 10 to 15 minutes for an adult, but you can do several sessions a day.  Same for pups, 5 minute sessions a couple times a day.
