different reasons.. for example, almost 80% of positive COVID-19 cases would develop Flu-like-symptoms (aka. ILI influenza-like-illness, or the seasonal/common flu symptoms).. anyone who is not paying enough attention would think that COVID-19 is the same as the Flu when it is not..`
[edited: the Common/Seasonal Flu or ILI symptoms, is mostly cough, fever, some sore throat and maybe running nose, while the Common Cold is mostly running nose and some mild fever..]
the Flu is a term reserved for infections caused by the influenzae family of viruses, like the Spanish Flu virus, the Swine Flu virus, the Bird (Avian) Flu virus, and the seasonal flu viruses (that includes influenza A and B) which is a big family of viruses that does not include coronaviruses.. Coronavirus is also a large family of viruses that include SARS coronavirus, MERS coronavirus and the Common Cold coronaviruses..
[edited .. Novel or Novus means "new" in Latin, a number of viruses were given the name Novel before it was renamed to something different.. for example, the MERS coronavirus was initially called 'the 2013-Novel-Coronavirus' or 13-nCov before it was renamed into MERS.. similarly COVID-19 was initially named the 2019-Novel-Coronavirus or 19-nCov until scientists and politicians sort out the naming part.. the term 'Novel' is often used in science to indicate something new before a proper name is given, like when discovering new polymers or new industrial chemical compounds, they often named 'Novel' products]
the reason why it was believed that mostly old people (over 50 years old) would get and die from COVID-19, is the data that we got from China in January and February.. but as the virus got out outside China, the virus decides to behave differently in Italy and in America with more young people in America and Italy were hospitalized and died from COVID-19 compared to China.. by the time the public had realized of those differences, it was too late and many young people went to parties and to beaches in the Spring-break, believing that it is only the elderly who would get the worst of the outbreak.. unfortunately COVID-19 behaves differently in America and in Europe compared to China..
according to the CDC on March 24th 2020, people at the age group of 20-50 years old, make up 40% of COVID-19 hospitalized cases, and 12% of COVID-19 cases in the intensive care (ICU, CCU etc) are between the ages of 20-40 years old.. which are much higher numbers than in Wuhan China with only 23% of COVID-19 cases (20-50 years olds) and about 5% of ICU cases (20-40 years old)..
and beside the wrong belief, there is this incredible level of selfishness by young people who feel that they are being robbed from their given right to celebrate and enjoy the spring break, and not realizing that many people are doing the right thing by staying at home.. they fail to realize that we are ALL being robbed from having a normal life..
ignorance, selfishness, lack of awareness, and simply lack of care..

Because they're ignorant. Yes it's a flu but it's a flu we haven't seen in the past 100 years. It's so new it's called a NOVEL flu aka new.
The transmission rate is higher than that of the seasonal flu. It was at 1% death rate, then 2% and Italy is nearing a 10% death rate. Equating that to the US population, we're talking about a potential 32 million people dead.
Yes it's still a FLU but it's not like our normal seasonal flu. There is no vaccine and there is no cure yet. Hardly something to take lightly.
And for people who don't care, then you are heartless. Just because someone doesn't have grandparents or know people who are immuno compromised doesn't mean that it's ok to just not care.
