I am capable of seeing ur question is past-tense unlike some here. I'll tell you why so many people thought he was great, and of course I dont want what im about to say to be taken the wrong way you know lol.

People thought he was great for abundant reasons. Too much to post here. He predicted the Great Depression which made him an economic prophet. Liberated Germany from oppression. United Germany again, making them a legit country. It wasn't even rich vs poor, it was all just German citizens & no leader has ever made a perfect country pull that off. This might be one reason why some people called him the messiah. Jews owned 7 out of 9 large newspapers and it was all anti-German or iow Liberal. Of course, he took care of that as im sure you already know. and there were a lot of other reasons.

Source(s): Many Books & research. Even Jewish Historian sources.

No one thought he was a great leader. He never was. He was a competent politician who managed to navigate his way to the top using a major crisis like a world war at a time when the country was in economic ruin, social unrest, poverty, no democratic government to his advantage.

I'm going to copy/paste an answer I just submitted elsewhere because of how easy it will be to see the relevance.

"Trump has fed them a steady stream of falsehoods they want to believe true. Anything displeasing is considered fake news. They live in a right wing echo chamber detached f/ reality which inundates affirmations to their insecurities. They won't hold trump accountable because it means they have to hold themself accountable for electing America's biggest mistake. When the smoke cleared and Germany lay in ruins the Nazis said they didn't know ... same thing. You can't make someone see who won't open their eyes. He convinced them their opinion "trumps" the facts."

He promised the equivalent of "Make Germany Great Again" (sound familiar?), and to restore the honor they had lost on account of the Treaty of Versailles (which was horribly vindictive).  He helped get Germans back to work (albeit making munitions) and provided protection from foreclosures and evictions for Germans unable to make mortgage payments and rent payments.  At first, the war was going quite well.  By 1940, he had conquered most of Europe, including the old archenemy, France, and he received a hero's welcome in Berlin.  If he had stopped there, instead of invading Russia and declaring war on the United States after Pearl Harbor, he might have done much better than he did.

I think they were just brain-washed or scared of him.

He was a great leader but, with a twisted mind. And people will still be asking the same question a in a 100 years time, that is if, the human race hasn't blown itself to bits in the meantime.

Hitler was by far NOT a good leader.  He was a ruthless dictator who murdered too many people because of their ancestry.

Because he made his Nazi Party into a very well organized political party and formed them into winner during the elections in the early 1930s when he grasped the opportunities provided by the depression of the early 1930s. Also, in the first half of his reign his government provided massive jobs that led to a vast decline in unemployment and also won in the late 1930s land without making any war. And in the first half of the war, his armies conquered much foreign territory, even more than any other army during WW2.

Belief in his leadership only started to decline after the defeat of Stalingrad.

Hitler never got more that 33% of the vote at any-time.
