Sometimes, even an unpleasant, cruddy, and unfortunate situation can be described as never-ending, right?

if it seems to be never-ending, of course. Most people do tend to see never-ending as a primarily negative condition: interminable as in unchangeable and inescapable. One could also use never0ending in a positive way, like heaven is never-ending bliss (the idea of eternity in a good way). Both eternal and interminable have the same idea (forever, never ending) but the first is primarily used for good things and the second for bad things. Not that they have to be, just that is how they tend to get used.

No, you are not right. Some things, however, are forever - like mental illness.

"never-ending" has no positive or negative implication. It can be used for positive things (such as "never-ending love") or negative things ("never-ending rain")

As you suggest it can be called never-ending but in fact, you know better.
