If the Coronavirus was discovered in 2019, why are we just now hearing about it?

I think I first heard about it in December or January but at that time it was considered a low risk and not widely published.

I read an article about "global warming" in the 70s.  It took thirty years before it became publicly topical.  So one year is an incredibly short time for the average person to discover that there is a problem.
