Well, he let it go a year so now he got a fail. It has to be fixed.  It is a job I would give to a mechanic because it is not big. So fast in then "BEAT IT WITH A HAMMER" and fast out. Just use a telephone book and phone a few mechanics for a quote(you know the car and the year) and they can quote a price over the phone...and time it takes to do.

Just that simple.  Then you can decide if it is worth it.

No wheel alignment needed afterwards either.  Or you could wait a year before the next MOT to get it done. By then more mechanics will be starving for some business so you get a better deal.

A car can fail it's MOT because it needs a new wiper blade.  It's nothing to worry about at all. An "advisory" is just the guy telling you  need to be aware of something. Maybe a tyre will need replacing in a few months. Again, it's nothing to worry about.

    Without knowing the year/model...

Might be a $20 ball joint....  Might be a several hundred dollars part and a lot of labor.

It means it is time to find another vehicle without issues and runs well.  There are thousands of them.

Replace the defective parts. That's the defect. Hire a shop to do that and align the front end.

Phone your local Halfords Autocentre (Not the retail store). Tell them what the reg.no. is and list the failures. They will quote to replace both lower wishbones. It used to be possible to replace just the ball joint. But increasingly manufacturers make the wishbone and joint integral. But check this with Halfords who I have found to be decent mechanics.

So it's the wishbones that need replacing on both sides . Is that correct ?
