Because they view President Assads government as a better alternative than ISIS and other extremists who could take over Syria. Also Russians have a naval base and do business I expect.

As some have said , it is because of their naval base. It is strategic.

Excluding having a permanent naval base in the Mediterranean Russian involvement acts as a counterbalance to US influence in the region.  By being involved in Syria Russia now has the opportunity to push the US aside and act as the major power broker.

Assad is the legitimate ruler of Syria. The US wants a change of power to somone more friendly to the US, so the US government supports the terrorists there. It is all politics.

Because of the big Russian naval base at Latakia Syria. It's the only one the Russians have in the Mediterranean and it keeps open Russia's only warm water ports in the Russian Black Sea. If a new Syrian government were to throw them out it would be a geopolitical disaster for their country. So, they back Assad for the continuing base. They'll back anyone who allows them to keep their long time base/port.

The Russians are not hard to figure out at all (despite what the dimwit US Congress pretends). The Russians are chess players, the world is the board, every move they make will be in their country's best interest for their homeland 'Mother Russia', it's that simple.

As bad as Assad is the main reason is that they don't want Syria becoming a safe haven for jihadist fanatics to plan their atrocities.  Keep in mind Russia bears some responsibility for this as Islamic extremism is a serious problem there.
