If the Patriots really want to keep Brady, why don't they just franchise tag him? ?

In his last contract the Patriots agreed not to.

They agreed not to, their statement is that he deserved/earned the right to decide his own future.
Both Bill and Robert have made public statements that they want him back, the ball is in his court.

Because of his age and because the Cheatriots didn't make it very far in the playoffs.

They don't really want to keep him. Both sides want to move on.

If the Cheatriots tag him they'll have to pay him $26,895,000.
For that kind of scratch they can sign someone who isn't washed up and, you know, gay.
Bundchen did not have a good year last year. His passing attempts were up but completions, passing yards and touchdowns were all down. Interceptions were down, too, but only because he rarely attempted a pass of more than 10 yards.
But Giselle needs a new pair of shoes so Little Tommy will shuffle out for at least one more year and probably sign with Tennessee where expectations will be low.
As bad as he is Bundchen is still an improvement over Mariota.

Brady is 42 and was awful last season. I guarantee the Patriots are doing everything they can to get rid of him without looking like *****.
The franchise tag would pay him more than what he would sign for without it.

Because they may not want to do that.

Because they can't.
That was part of the last restructuring they did on his contract.
