How is Frisian closer to English than Dutch is? I only have one book in Frisian and I fail to see the similarity to English.?

Don't let books fool you. maybe you would HEAR the similarity. Vocabulary-wise, we're talking about west-germanic dialects. English, Frisian (and Scots?) are on one branch of the westgermanic languages, Dutch and Flemish are on another.  EN-FY-NL you have

    butter - butter - boter

    green - grien - groen

    cheese - tsiis (?) - kaas

    bread - brea(d) - brood
