You're not the only one. An obvious factor was exposure, but it is not clear whether other contributing factors have been identified and, if so, what changes have been made to protect others from having the same outcome.

Wonder if amid all the reported shortages of medical gear in China he was even able to wear the full hazmat ensemble.

Most of the masks out there, listed as things like surgical masks or recommended for dentist and such. Are not protective enough against this virus. You see the pics of the citizens all wearing masks, most of them surgical type, they are kidding themselves. Those masks that I have described above, are a step above the one worn for debris, the ones found in home centers for insulation or Sheetrock work and such. I do hope those masks offer some protection, becouse there has been a run on them and now, sellers are greatly marking them up.

Because what he/they were wearing is inadequate to protect from the airborne particles.

The regular masks, like the kind you can buy at Home Depot, for keeping dust out when you mow the lawn, doing sanding, etc. are a placebo only they do not tightly seal around the face.

In the U.S. the N95 respirator protects from particulates of 0.3 or greater, however, the COVID-19 (aka coronavirus) virus is in particulates 0.1.  So what even is normally worn in hospitals is inadequate.  They basically need a full biohazard suit, like what you see in the movies.

Or the 1,700 Chinese health care workers who contracted it. They were wearing protective gear too.

He had his hands open.  Or....  It just fell right into his hands.  Take your pick.
